It seemed so good to hear from you after not getting any mail for six days. I know how glad you were to hear from me after not getting any mail for over a week. Your letters mean everything to me darling. The two I got today were dated Jan 2 & 3, the first ones written in 45. The weather is very warm today, almost too hot to be out in the sun without a shirt. I have a good tan from my waist up. I’m going to make me a pair of shorts out of an old pair of pants, that’s the only way to keep cool during this hot weather. The fly’s are pretty bad over here, they hang on just like leeches. I’ve not seen a mosquito for a long time, I think its too cool at night for them. I take atabrine pills every day, I have no desire to have malaria. I had a good dinner today - spam, peas, macaroni, pineapple pie, and chocolate drink. I like spam better than most of the canned meats, some of them I never liked very well. I’m going to the movie tonight, I hope its better than the last one. They haven’t been very good lately. Yes, I remember the morning I left for Ft. Ben. I think that’s one I will never forget. You must have had a good time at Mrs. Harry Blakes shower, I’ll bet it seemed good to meet some of your old school pals again. I don’t believe I know the Hester girl; too bad about her husband being missing in action. I suppose you had some good food; although you didn’t mention anything except cake. How did Diana like it? The water was just like ice, the sun don’t seem to warm it up very much. I would enjoy taking a hot shower! I was going to send you the “Roundup” today, but couldn’t find anything to wrap it up in. Soon as I find some paste or glue I will send it to you. We had a good dinner today; steak, French fries, peas, pie, and coffee. That’s the first good beef steak we have had in months. One of the boys in my tent purchased a big white duck somewhere this morning so we are going to cook him some time to-day. Jan. 8, 1945 Burma Mary Darling, I got some more mail today, a letter from you and Xmas car from Vinnie. Your letter was postmarked Dec. 19. I have not wrote to Vinnie for several months so I must write to her soon. I owe Hutch a letter too. Too bad you didn’t look at deRoamans store for Diana’s overshoes, before you went to Anderson. You wont have to carry her when you go out now. I was going to ask you what you bought her for Xmas but according to this letter you haven’t done your Christmas shopping yet. Seems odd for me to be writing about Xmas now that Jan is here. You haven’t received some of my letters yet because I got my pipe and the magazine you sent me a long time ago. Yes, I’m going to write Earl Painter and thank him for the pipe. We got our months (Dec.) rations last night, twelve cans of beer and three cartons of cigarettes. We didn’t get any candy, maybe we will get some later in the month. I don’t care much for candy any way. I saw Lambourn the other day, he and I talked about our usual thing, hunting and fishing. He said that his wife and baby are getting along fine. He is in a different company but I see him once in a while. I think cigarettes are getting scares every where, we don’t get as many as we used to. Now that I have a pipe I get along O.K. Pipe tobacco is not very hard to get. What made you think that I thought you were smoking? Ha! You can smoke if you want to, I don’t think I even said anything about you smoking. I had to laugh when you said, “I have not been smoking sweety.” I sent my clothes to the laundry to-day, it didn’t take them very long to wash them. I got them back about noon, they were wet but I hung them out in the sun to day. Before the rain there was so much dust around here that you couldn’t keep anything clean. My friend, Fiola was kidding me about writing to you, I told him he wasn’t game to write to you. He is very bashful. He is a good friend of mine, & we have been together a long time. We had deer steak smothered with onions, peas, bullion soup, bread, and coffee. We have deer meat quite often. Have you ever tasted deer meat, I like it just as well as beef. Today is the first day of 1945. When I started to write this letter I almost wrote 44 before I thought. If you get any letters dated 44 don’t think anything about it, you know how I forget some things. Last night didn’t seem much like New Years Eve. Every one in camp got paid so most of the guys spent the evening playing poker. We did have a little surprise though. We were given 5 bottles of beer! I drank 4 of mine and finished the other one this morning. I didn’t get paid because I signed the pay-roll in H & S Co. I suppose I will get my money about the tenth of the month. I’m not worrying about it very much, there is no place to spend any. I will send you another money order as soon as I can. Happy New Year darling I love you more each day. Loretta Young was deaf and had been to several great ear doctors but none of them did her any good. Ladd was experimenting with some new serum which was supposed to bring back ones hearing. I wish you could see how beautiful it is up here, this stream is so cold and clean that you can see the bottom almost any place. I have seen several fish right by our tent. I saw some deer tracks just a few yds. up stream; and I sure would like to hunt and fish some but we don’t have any equipment. There is rocks up here as big as a house and in the cracks are little lizzards that can run like hell, you can hardly see them they go so fast. I see two of them on a big rock running them self’s. I shaved yesterday and boy did I have a time, this water is so cold that it just about froze my face, but I sure felt good after I finished. I washed my feet this morn in the stream too. It rained about all day Mon., but has stopped at the present and the temp is swell during the day time. At night it frost; everything white and even freezes ice in some places. I’m sorry I let my close get so dirty, I promise I won’t do it again, often I come from the mts. How are you getting along with your new job? Don’t work too hard honey. Mr. Bean got a pass tonight. I hope to get one tomorrow or just as soon as I can. We work 8 hr shifts so as soon as I’m on the 7:00 am to 3:00 pm I should get a pass. It’s about 50 mi to Fresno. I have never received any of your mail in less than ten days, usually they take 14 or 15. I got one letter in seven days but that was my ballot during election time, it must have carried a high priority. I sent my wrist watch to you today, it was broken so there was no use in me keeping it. I need a watch pretty bad. We get them once a month in our rations but I’ve not been lucky enough to get one. You can do whatever you want to with my watch, I don’t know if its worth fixing or not. I have read several pocket size books, we get them through Special Services. Special Service put on a stage show for us tonight, so I thought I would wait until after the show to write to you. The show was pretty good, six G.I.’s dressed up as girls danced and etc; they had a small band that was pretty good, also some singers. No mail came in today. I should get some tomorrow or the next day. I hope I don’t go five days without getting any mail like I did last week. Sometimes mail comes pretty fast and some times it takes several weeks. Do you get mail more than once a week? I usually average two times a week. You can send me some more writing paper. I have plenty of envelopes. John Wayne and Ann Dovark were the leading actors. “The Man from Barbary Coast.” I think this was the name but I’m not sure. It was a western picture but not the wild and wooly kind. A lot of mail came in today, but not much for me, all I got was March 12th issue of the Times. Hope I have better luck the next time. I was just reading in the Times about the cigarette shortage back in the States, according to it the black-market is causing all the shortage. They also said cigarettes were selling for $2.40 per carton, that sounds like too much money for me. We received our rations for March today, they cost 17 rupees 11 annas- We got three cartons of cigs, eleven candy bars, six cigars, three cans of nuts, writing tablet,one can of juice, one case of beer (Pabst) and a box of cookies. I traded my cigards for a writing tablet and my candy for fruit juice. I don’t care much for cigars or candy. I think I have enough writing paper to last me for a while, I asked you to send me some in yesterday’s letter, but I can always use it. It’s better to have too much than not enough. I just drank a can of my beer, it tastes pretty good since its cool - Goodnight darling, I love you more each day. Our food is much better than it was a few weeks ago. The ration truck gets here every day, it brings our food from Pinedale. We had chops for supper last night - very good! I sure miss seeing you honey, guess I will just have to wait until Friday 31 as far as I know now. If the Lt. sees fit I will see you Fri evening. He don’t care if we get a pass or not, he was in Fresno 3 days out of 5 this week, same stuff, eh?! I sure hope we get a different C.O. before we go ashore. You should see the snow on the mountains today, it looks as if it snowed more last night, its much farther down the mountain than it was. Honey even at noon the wind is pretty cool up here but at night its usually a still cold. Don’t worry honey, I sleep warm enough because we always have a fire in our tent and its really comfortable. We use big pine cones to start our fire, they burn very easy and make quite a lot of heat. The odor from them is pleasing too, just like perfume. Ha! I got another shot today but it hasn’t had time to make my arm sore yet. I sure hope I don’t chill like I did that one time. Yes! Honey! I had the M.D. to put some medicine under my arm, he said it was some kind of rash. I’m going to have him paint my arm every-day until its gone. I sure hope we get paid before long, I have got 36 cents. Ha! I’m going to take a shower in a little while. There is a place about 5 mi down the road, some kind of convenience-objectors camp. Willkie, Presidential Candidate in 1940 and author of One World. Also known as the home of Red Gold Tomato Products, the fastest growing tomato products in the United States. Home of Dunn Rite Pool products, J Lewis Small class rings, St. Clair Glass, and the Elwood Glass Festival. But perhaps Elwood’s most well-known citizen is one who is not famous. One who will never be noticed in the annals of History. And one who will go to his grave unmarked by the majority of people. Yet, he has probably had more effect on graduates of Elwood High School than any of the above mentioned items. This man, Marvin Crim, Wendell L. Willkie High School graduate of 1957 is remarkable beyond the bounds of the ordinary. He has done something no one else has done anywhere. He has created a web site which links its members together in a remarkable group. This group is called The Panther Den. It is named for the gathering place of high school students in old Wendell L. Willkie High School. In the old Panther Den students would gather each noon after lunch, on Wednesday evenings, after ball games, and on other special occasions to dance, listen to music, play pool, gossip and just in general hang out. On the modern day Panther Dan, almost 500 people with links to Elwood High School are joined by their computers. Through the homepages created by Crim and through email, these persons correspond on a daily basis trading stories of their home town, their childhood, school days, memories of friends and also share their modern lives. While most members are graduates of Wendell L. Willkie High School (Elwood Community High School since the 1970’s), some are spouses, children, or parents of graduates. There are also members who attended school in Elwood, but did not graduate for one reason or another. Ages of the group run from its oldest member Robert Benedict, 92, to students currently in high school. Members can be found in almost all the 50 states and it boasts one member from China. As stated on it’s web site The Panther Den’s purpose is “To provide a communication link for everyone interested in Elwood High School, Wendell L. Willkie High School, and �Elwood Community High School along with all the grand people, buildings, and events associated with them.” The Panther Den Web site includes along with its opening pages a photo gallery of many members which have been submitted over the years. There is a Notes Page where members can listen to music that Crim has put there for enjoyment. There is a “Without Them” section which is dedicated to people that have been important to members of the Den. It includes teachers, graduates, and citizens of Elwood who have made a difference in this world. Another feature of the Den site is “The Megaphone”, an on-line newspaper which is named for the high school newspaper. Members of the group submit stories on a monthly basis to Crim who organizes and “publishes” their efforts. A final feature of the Web site is “The Hall Clock”. The Megaphone that members remember had regular gossip column called the Hall Clock. This updated version written by Crim is full of comments and roastings of various members that Crim has gleaned from email and conversations of the past week. Crim who is affectionately called “Doc” (Dr. Frankenstein) by the members of the group is assisted in his efforts by his “Mod Squad” a group of 12 moderators who help in running the group’s day-to-day activities. He has his loyal assistant “Igor”, Loretta Jarvis Dodd for a sounding board, and “Sys” Teresa Dickey Hollowell to help him with the technical side of the site. Our very special moderator Sharon Benedict Hurst, aka Angel # 2, keeps us aware of Breast Cancer research and runs the local Breast Cancer Awareness Group. The “Birthday Goirls”, Lynn Davies Funk and Genie Forst Boyer, who keep track of members’ birthdays and anniversaries and send e-cards to commemorate these events. “Mama Duck” Vicki Hull Wardwell is responsible for the Prayer Panthers which accepts prayer requests from members in need of help and also who recently coordinated a Silent Auction at the group’s Annual meeting Denstock II with proceeds going to a high school scholarship. At the group’s email site, pantherden@yahoogroups.com, one finds the email letters that have been sent by members through the years. There are also files which contain photos, recipes, and various other informational tidbits that members have contributed. Membership is limited to those with links to the school city of Elwood and must be approved. The group meets several times a year for parties and get-togethers. They celebrated Christmas and New Years as well as having a Birthday party on April 1 to commemorate �the group’s 2nd anniversary. A skating party was held at the local skating rink which is about to be closed and torn down. Many members remember skating there while growing up and wanted one last chance to skate before it was gone. The group participated in both the Elwood Glass Festival and Homecoming Parades last year and is planning to do so again this year. But the big celebration held each year is Denstock. This year was Denstock II. It is a huge celebration held in Callaway Park in Elwood on June 23. Both years there have been well over 200 members and guests in attendance. Denstock includes many activities. There is music from the ‘50’s and 60’s being played over speakers; a program in which gifts---both gag and serious---are given to members. This year’s gifts included one for Bob Benedict the oldest in attendance and Jack Gootee who traveled the farthest having come from China. Members held a pitch-in lunch. There was a silent auction managed by Vicki Wardwell with assistance from members Catherine “Toots” Pethoud. Members donated all sorts of items for auction. Some were homemade. Others were high school or Elwood souvenirs. The proceeds from the auction were donated to the high school to be given to a graduating senior as a scholarship in memory of a “passing Panther” i.e. a member who has died within the last year. The auction raised $1000 for this cause. There was also a quilt made by Wardwell which was given as a door prize to Rick Rogers, Class of ’67. Denstock III will be held in Callaway Park again on June 15, 2002. In addition to the Denstock II held in Elwood, there was also a Southwest Den Meet held in February in Phoenix, AZ, and a meet held in Knoxville, TN this spring. Plans are in place to repeat these meets and to perhaps have meets in other locals such as central Florida next year. Members of the Panther Den think Marvin Crim has created a site that is unique among web sites. They have not heard of anyplace else that has such a site.
