I wrote to the Guide several weeks ago, sending my new address. I haven’t received any of the Guide papers so I wrote to them asking if they would send them to me. They answered with a nice letter, telling me that they were glad to hear from me and would send the Guide paper. The film didn’t come in today so there is no show tonight. I don’t have anything to do so will probably play cards. That’s about the best pastime there is. We had chili for supper tonight it was pretty good. The weather is really hot here now. He said that he had been pretty busy trying to get the books up to date. He also told me about Gene Richardson’s death. I went to the movie ton-night but the projector broke, so we didn’t get to see any of the show. Don’t seem like tomorrow is Easter Sunday. Time has passed pretty fast for me. I am going to church - 9:30 tomorrow morning. I was just thinking about the time you came to K.C, that was around Easter. I was sure glad to see you, you were wearing a new suit and hat. Our food is much better than it was a few weeks ago. The ration truck gets here every day, it brings our food from Pinedale. We had chops for supper last night - very good! I sure miss seeing you honey, guess I will just have to wait until Friday 31 as far as I know now. If the Lt. sees fit I will see you Fri evening. He don’t care if we get a pass or not, he was in Fresno 3 days out of 5 this week, same stuff, eh?! I sure hope we get a different C.O. before we go ashore. You should see the snow on the mountains today, it looks as if it snowed more last night, its much farther down the mountain than it was. Honey even at noon the wind is pretty cool up here but at night its usually a still cold. Don’t worry honey, I sleep warm enough because we always have a fire in our tent and its really comfortable. We use big pine cones to start our fire, they burn very easy and make quite a lot of heat. The odor from them is pleasing too, just like perfume. Ha! I got another shot today but it hasn’t had time to make my arm sore yet. I sure hope I don’t chill like I did that one time. Yes! Honey! I had the M.D. to put some medicine under my arm, he said it was some kind of rash. I’m going to have him paint my arm every-day until its gone. I sure hope we get paid before long, I have got 36 cents. Ha! I’m going to take a shower in a little while. There is a place about 5 mi down the road, some kind of convenience-objectors camp. I think a nice place to go. Ha! I work 11:00 pm to 7:00 am to-night, so I’m going to try to get some rest this afternoon. This is all the news for now, hope to see you Fri evening. We are we are farther up in the mountains, up where the big pines are. It’s a lot colder up here; we are only a few thousand yards from the snow. Bass Lake is beautiful and I sure would like to fish in it, I have seen several fish jump, also several ducks and squirrels. I don’t know how long we will be up here, I hope not over two weeks. John Wayne and Ann Dovark were the leading actors. “The Man from Barbary Coast.” I think this was the name but I’m not sure. It was a western picture but not the wild and wooly kind. A lot of mail came in today, but not much for me, all I got was March 12th issue of the Times. Hope I have better luck the next time. I was just reading in the Times about the cigarette shortage back in the States, according to it the black-market is causing all the shortage. They also said cigarettes were selling for $2.40 per carton, that sounds like too much money for me. We received our rations for March today, they cost 17 rupees 11 annas- We got three cartons of cigs, eleven candy bars, six cigars, three cans of nuts, writing tablet,one can of juice, one case of beer (Pabst) and a box of cookies. Special Service put on a stage show for us tonight, so I thought I would wait until after the show to write to you. The show was pretty good, six G.I.’s dressed up as girls danced and etc; they had a small band that was pretty good, also some singers. No mail came in today. I should get some tomorrow or the next day. I hope I don’t go five days without getting any mail like I did last week. Sometimes mail comes pretty fast and some times it takes several weeks. Do you get mail more than once a week? I usually average two times a week. You can send me some more writing paper. I have plenty of envelopes. I wish you could see how beautiful it is up here, this stream is so cold and clean that you can see the bottom almost any place. I have seen several fish right by our tent. I saw some deer tracks just a few yds. up stream; and I sure would like to hunt and fish some but we don’t have any equipment. There is rocks up here as big as a house and in the cracks are little lizzards that can run like hell, you can hardly see them they go so fast. I see two of them on a big rock running them self’s. I shaved yesterday and boy did I have a time, this water is so cold that it just about froze my face, but I sure felt good after I finished. I washed my feet this morn in the stream too. It rained about all day Mon., but has stopped at the present and the temp is swell during the day time. At night it frost; everything white and even freezes ice in some places. I’m sorry I let my close get so dirty, I promise I won’t do it again, often I come from the mts. How are you getting along with your new job? Don’t work too hard honey. Mr. Bean got a pass tonight. I hope to get one tomorrow or just as soon as I can. We work 8 hr shifts so as soon as I’m on the 7:00 am to 3:00 pm I should get a pass. It’s about 50 mi to Fresno. Anyway, I hope I have better luck tomorrow. I just used the last sheet of stationary that you have been sending me, I still have a few envelopes left though. I am going to use the box you sent me in my Xmas box next. The paper is not as large as this. I wrote a letter to Irsy today. He is still in the K-9 corps at Baer Field. He talked like he would be an M.P. soon, I don’t think I would like that very well. Said his wife had been with him for 14 months. He also wants a picture of Diana and you. We had fresh eggs for breakfast this morning, they were sure good. Our food has been about the same as usual. I hope we have some more steak one of these days. We had canned beef for dinner today. I saw a good movie last night - “And Then Tomorrow.” Allan Ladd and Loretta Young were the actors. Alan Ladd was a doctor; an ear surgeon. Loretta Young was deaf and had been to several great ear doctors but none of them did her any good. Ladd was experimenting with some new serum which was supposed to bring back ones hearing. We had deer steak smothered with onions, peas, bullion soup, bread, and coffee. We have deer meat quite often. Have you ever tasted deer meat, I like it just as well as beef. Today is the first day of 1945. When I started to write this letter I almost wrote 44 before I thought. If you get any letters dated 44 don’t think anything about it, you know how I forget some things. Last night didn’t seem much like New Years Eve. Every one in camp got paid so most of the guys spent the evening playing poker. We did have a little surprise though. We were given 5 bottles of beer! I drank 4 of mine and finished the other one this morning. I didn’t get paid because I signed the pay-roll in H & S Co. I suppose I will get my money about the tenth of the month. I have not wrote to Vinnie for several months so I must write to her soon. I owe Hutch a letter too. Too bad you didn’t look at deRoamans store for Diana’s overshoes, before you went to Anderson. You wont have to carry her when you go out now. I was going to ask you what you bought her for Xmas but according to this letter you haven’t done your Christmas shopping yet. Seems odd for me to be writing about Xmas now that Jan is here. You haven’t received some of my letters yet because I got my pipe and the magazine you sent me a long time ago. Yes, I’m going to write Earl Painter and thank him for the pipe. We got our months (Dec.) rations last night, twelve cans of beer and three cartons of cigarettes. We didn’t get any candy, maybe we will get some later in the month. I don’t care much for candy any way. I saw Lambourn the other day, he and I talked about our usual thing, hunting and fishing. He said that his wife and baby are getting along fine. He is in a different company but I see him once in a while. I think cigarettes are getting scares every where, we don’t get as many as we used to. Now that I have a pipe I get along O.K. Pipe tobacco is not very hard to get. What made you think that I thought you were smoking? Ha! You can smoke if you want to, I don’t think I even said anything about you smoking. I had to laugh when you said, “I have not been smoking sweety.” I sent my clothes to the laundry to-day, it didn’t take them very long to wash them. I got them back about noon, they were wet but I hung them out in the sun to day. Before the rain there was so much dust around here that you couldn’t keep anything clean. My friend, Fiola was kidding me about writing to you, I told him he wasn’t game to write to you. He is very bashful. He is a good friend of mine, & we have been together a long time. The weather is very warm today, almost too hot to be out in the sun without a shirt. I have a good tan from my waist up. Jan. 21, 1945 Burma To My Darling wife, I just finished eating supper, we had corn fritters, cold pork loaf, cheese, tomatoes, bread & jam, and hot chocolate. I was very hungry tonight. I ate everything in my mess-kit. We have had good food lately, I hope it stays this way. I read the letter you wrote to Fiola. He’s a good pal of mine and we have been buddies for over a year. I don’t think you ever met him. He lives in Illinois, Brookfield I think, its not very far from Chicago. I didn’t get any mail today, hope you had better luck than I did, honey. Jan. 20, 1945 Burma Mary Darling, I didn’t get any mail from you to-day, not much mail has come in the last few days. I got a letter from Bob today. It was postmarked Jan 2., that’s the latest letter I have received up to date. He sent me a clipping out of the D.R. Clan, of Harry Blake and his wife. The picture was good, I think it was taken at the Remy. He also told me that Russ Hooper is at Camp Sibert, Aba. I don’t know why he don’t write, I wrote to him a long time ago. I just happened to think about how long I’ve been in the army, it was two years Jan 14. I think that’s one date I will never forget. I hope I’m home by this time next year. I love you darling, and miss you more each day. Jan. 19, 1945 Burma Dearest Mary, No mail from you today. I got a Xmas package from the Methodist Church, a letter from Bevy and one from Neil. I think I have received about all of my Xmas boxes, I think this was my seventh one. I needed most of the things sent to me. I have enough foot-powder to last me a life time - six cans! I have four new tooth brushes, I need them, my old one was about worn out. I have had it almost a year. I just finished reading my sports magazines so I’m sending them to Lambourn. He likes to read them as well as I do so we exchange. Do you still work at the hardware store every Fri? I can see why Walt McCord annoys you, he talks all the time and doesn’t say anything. I wish you could see how beautiful it is up here, this stream is so cold and clean that you can see the bottom almost any place. I have seen several fish right by our tent. I saw some deer tracks just a few yds. upstream; and I sure would like to hunt and fish some but we don’t have any equipment. There is rocks up here as big as a house and in the cracks are little lizard’s that can run like hell, you can hardly see them they go so fast. I see two of them on a big rock running them self’s. I shaved yesterday and boy did I have a time, this water is so cold that it just about froze my face, but I sure felt good after I finished. I washed my feet this morn in the stream too. It rained about all day Mon., but has stopped at the present and the temp is swell during the day time. At night it frost; everything white and even freezes ice in some places. I’m sorry I let my close get so dirty, I promise I won’t do it again; often I come from the mts. How are you getting along with your new job? Don’t work too hard honey. Mr. Bean got a pass tonight. I hope to get one tomorrow or just as soon as I can. We work 8 hr. shifts so as soon as I’m on the 7:00 am to 3:00 pm I should get a pass. It’s about 50 mi to Fresno. I must stop honey, and eat supper. I’m on 11:00 pm to 7:00 am tonight Bye darling I love you very much. Jan. 16, 1945 Burma To My Darling Wife, I got a package from Dot today. After I opened it I found that some of the gifts were from Diana and you. I can use everything you sent me. I think the picture of Diana is beautiful, I’m going to trim the edges a little and put it in my folder. Where was the picture taken? I couldn’t ask for a better Xmas gift, darling. All I want now is a picture of you; soon as I get enough pictures’ I will change them, one for every day in the week. I went to the movie last night, didn’t enjoy it very much - a murder mystery, “One Corpse Too Many.” Jean Parker and Jack Healy were the leading actors. I don’t feel very good to night, I have a little cold and headache. Soon as I finish this letter I’m going to bed. I will write Dot and thank her for the gifts. Thanks for everything, darling.
