I should be getting a letter from Irsy pretty soon, he said that he was going on furlough so maybe that’s the reason I have not heard from him. The war news sounds good. Now that they have a base within bombing range of Tokyo. One of the boys in my tent got some film the other day, so I may have some pictures to send you pretty soon. Your letters were postmarked Feb 6, 7, & 8, I didn’t notice when the box of flints were mailed. Thanks for the flints and stationary, honey. I don’t think I will run out of flints for a long time, do you! We took some pictures today. I don’t know when we will get them printed. No, the bronze star doesn’t carry any increase in pay, although it does count some points toward a discharge. I don’t know just how much it is. I have received the ribbon but not the star. I’m sorry my package didn’t get here in time; it may be a month before it arrives. I will enjoy getting it even if it is a little late. No mail came in today. I don’t look for any until the 27th, that’s the way it usually arrives. You have sure had a lot of snow this winter. The ground must have been covered about all winter. Bob said this was the worst winter in years. He sent me Russ Harpers new address. He is guarding war-prisoners down in Miss. I don’t know why he hasn’t wrote to me, I wrote to him over a month ago. I started using the new stationary you sent me the other day. It’s pretty hard to write on because of the creases. I’m not a very good writer but I think you can read it anyway. I was going to church this morning but I forgot about it being Sun. I never know the day of the week any more. They are building a Red Cross here. It will be several weeks before it’s finished, they just started about a week ago. I’ll be glad when they get it finished; there is no place to go around here. I went down to the creek to take a bath today; the water was pretty cold and I didn’t stay in very long. I usually wash my hair two times a week but I think I’m going to stop because it’s getting too dry. The water is so hard that you can hardly wash the soap off. We had chili for supper, also hot biscuits, peas, fruit, and coffee. We can’t always get bread so we have biscuits two or three times a week. No mail came in today. I can use everything that was sent to me. We don’t always get our rations so all of this stuff will come in handy. One time I was down to my last bar of soap. Remember the soap that you sent me in Fresno? That’s the bar I had left, I think it was Wrisleys. How is Diana? How much does she weigh? I think the picture you sent me is swell. I should get some tomorrow; it’s been three days since I heard from you. I wrote Ray & Anita a letter last night thanking them for the Xmas box. We had some postum last night and it was pretty good. One of the boys in my tent bought two dozen fresh eggs from the natives so we had another supper. How much is eggs back home? We paid seven rupees for two dozen, that’s about $2.10 U.S. money. That’s the first fresh eggs I’ve had since I’ve been overseas. I hope that we can get some more sometime. Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary. Time has passed pretty fast, don’t seem like it’s been four years. I’m going to send you something. It will be several weeks late but I know you will understand. Eagleman, and one from Phelps. Your letter was dated 17 Jan. The one with the magazine was Jan 22, that the way it usually happens, the most important letters arrive later than the others. You have been getting quite a lot of mail; then letters and the week isn’t over yet. I hope I do that good this week. I may have dated some of my letters wrong honey, I have a hard time remembering what day of the month it is, the one dated Dec 2 was probably Jan 2. The letter I got from I say was sent free and it reached me the same time your air-mail did, I sometimes wonder about the mail situation! Ha! I just wrote to I say two days ago but it looks like I will write him another letter. He is still training dogs in the K-9 corps. I guess he likes it O.K. Told me he was just getting ready to go on furlough I see no reason why he shouldn’t like it. Just being in the States would satisfy me. Do you remember Eddie Trafton, he went to school with me in K. C. I say said that he was just about to finish his pilots training. I’m going to ask for his address. About a month ago I had a hard time finding stationary, so that accounts for so many different kinds. This tablet I have now was given to me by an English soldier. I still have the box you sent me for Xmas, also two or three boxes on the way so I shouldn’t run out very soon I’ll tell you the reason that I don’t use both sides of the paper. If the censor cuts something out it don’t destroy any of the letter on the other side. I’ll admit it would save a lot of paper to use both side, but I don’t just in case. We had a good supper tonight, beef-steak, corn, beans, biscuits, jam, peaches, and tea. The steak I had was tender, most of the time it’s pretty tough. I wish you could see how beautiful it is up here, this stream is so cold and clean that you can see the bottom almost any place. I have seen several fish right by our tent. I saw some deer tracks just a few yds. upstream; and I sure would like to hunt and fish some but we don’t have any equipment. There is rocks up here as big as a house and in the cracks are little lizard’s that can run like hell, you can hardly see them they go so fast. I see two of them on a big rock running them self’s. I shaved yesterday and boy did I have a time, this water is so cold that it just about froze my face, but I sure felt good after I finished. I washed my feet this morn in the stream too. It rained about all day Mon., but has stopped at the present and the temp is swell during the day time. At night it frost; everything white and even freezes ice in some places. I’m sorry I let my close get so dirty, I promise I won’t do it again; often I come from the mts. How are you getting along with your new job? Don’t work too hard honey. Mr. Bean got a pass tonight. It seemed so good to hear from you after not getting any mail for six days. I know how glad you were to hear from me after not getting any mail for over a week. The weather is very warm today, almost too hot to be out in the sun without a shirt. I have a good tan from my waist up. I’m going to make me a pair of shorts out of an old pair of pants, that’s the only way to keep cool during this hot weather. The fly’s are pretty bad over here, they hang on just like leeches. I’ve not seen a mosquito for a long time, I think its too cool at night for them. I take atabrine pills every day, I have no desire to have malaria. He said that his wife and baby are getting along fine. He is in a different company but I see him once in a while. We had deer steak smothered with onions, peas, bullion soup, bread, and coffee. We have deer meat quite often. Have you ever tasted deer meat, I like it just as well as beef. Today is the first day of 1945. When I started to write this letter I almost wrote 44 before I thought. If you get any letters dated 44 don’t think anything about it, you know how I forget some things. Last night didn’t seem much like New Years Eve. Every one in camp got paid so most of the guys spent the evening playing poker. We did have a little surprise though. We were given 5 bottles of beer! I drank 4 of mine and finished the other one this morning. I didn’t get paid because I signed the pay-roll in H & S Co. I suppose I will get my money about the tenth of the month. I saw a good movie last night - “And Then Tomorrow.” Allan Ladd and Loretta Young were the actors. Alan Ladd was a doctor; an ear surgeon. Loretta Young was deaf and had been to several great ear doctors but none of them did her any good. Ladd was experimenting with some new serum which was supposed to bring back ones hearing. I wish you could see how beautiful it is up here, this stream is so cold and clean that you can see the bottom almost any place. I have seen several fish right by our tent. I saw some deer tracks just a few yds. up stream; and I sure would like to hunt and fish some but we don’t have any equipment. There is rocks up here as big as a house and in the cracks are little lizzards that can run like hell, you can hardly see them they go so fast. I see two of them on a big rock running them self’s. I shaved yesterday and boy did I have a time, this water is so cold that it just about froze my face, but I sure felt good after I finished. I washed my feet this morn in the stream too. It rained about all day Mon., but has stopped at the present and the temp is swell during the day time. At night it frost; everything white and even freezes ice in some places. I’m sorry I let my close get so dirty, I promise I won’t do it again, often I come from the mts. How are you getting along with your new job? Don’t work too hard honey. Mr. Bean got a pass tonight. I hope to get one tomorrow or just as soon as I can. We work 8 hr shifts so as soon as I’m on the 7:00 am to 3:00 pm I should get a pass. It’s about 50 mi to Fresno. Two of your letters were dated Feb. 22 - the other 26th. I was sure glad to hear from you. This was the fifth day so if I didn’t get any mail today I was going to give up hopes. Does Diana like to play with tammy? I know they used to have several disputes over their toys. Maybe they will get more acquainted when they get a little older. I went to the movie last night - “The Animals Kingdom.” Jack Carson, Ann Sheridan, Jane Wayman, Alexis Smith - I can’t think of the other actors names. It was a pretty good show, but I can’t see any connection between the name and the show. I just finished eating supper - we had salmon loaf, peas & corn, corn bread, peaches, and coffee. I don’t know why but I’ve not had much of an appetite lately. Sounds like you are having more winter back home - you mentioned having rain, sleet, and snow. You will surely have some warm weather pretty soon. The weather was warm today, although it is a little cooler this evening. I sent you a money order Feb. 1. All the mail I’ve received in the last few days has been old; I received mail written in March almost a week ago. Hope you are having better luck than I am. We had some good meals today - steak and onions for dinner and meat-loaf for supper. Onions don’t agree with me very well but I ate some anyway. We bought some eggs today so will probably have them some night this week. I didn’t go the Church today but I hope to next Sunday. I love you as always, Mary. I think I have most of my back mail now. I’ll bet you had a swell time reading the nine letters you mentioned getting. It’s too bad that they don’t arrive more often though. Darling I tried to get you something over here that is for our wedding anniversary - but couldn’t find anything. I tried to think of something I could buy, or I mean have Bob buy; that you would like. From the way you talk in your letter, I don’t think that I did. I only hope that you won’t be too disappointed. Darling, I feel the same way as you so about returning to the States. Nothing would make me more happy. It’s just something that we can’t help, at-least for now. You mentioned receiving several letters dated in Feb, I was just wondering if you have received a money-order for $90 in that letter, that’s the reason I’m asking. I hope it’s not lost anywhere. March 2, 1945 Burma Dearest Mary, I just saw a pretty good stage show; several GI’s were dressed up as cowboys. They played western songs, also some square-dances. One of the boys played a banjo very good, seems like I’ve seen home somewhere before, maybe in some show back home. My arm is a little sore tonight, we got two shots today. I think they were for typhus and cholera. I don’t think I will ever forget the first ones I got at Ft. Ben. I felt like I had a fever for two or three days. Just a few letters came in today.
