North Madison County Public Library
providing sources and services at the user's point of need

Welcome to the new and improved genealogy database!

Photos – In this section of the database you will find hundreds of historical photos and postcards mostly depicting Elwood, IN. To see a list of all available photos simply click on the search button without using any search terms.

Articles – This section is a work in progress. The plan is to begin adding Elwood telephone directories from the early 1900’s.

Obituaries – In this section of the database you will find an index to obituaries that have been published in our local newspapers. Please reference list of newspapers with dates at the end of this section. Obituaries can be searched by clicking on the Obituaries link at the top of the page. Several records in this index came from the resource, Index to Death Records Madison County 1882 to 1920. We are working to source these records as death records not obituaries.* Some records in this index dated in 1893 through 1896 and 1899 through 1920 have the actual obituary available for viewing and printing.** If the obituary you need is not available for printing, you can request a copy by emailing the adult services department at adultservices@elwood.lib.in.us with the name and source date of the obituary listed. The cost to have any obituaries mailed to you is $.10 per page plus the price of postage. Obituaries can be e-mailed to you free of charge. When requesting obituaries please be patient as we have only one staff member answering these requests.

The following newspapers are available on microfilm at the Elwood Public Library and indexed in this database:
  • Daily Press: January 1st, 1893 – October 31st, 1896

  • Daily Record: December 13th, 1896 – December 31st, 1910, and August 1911

  • Elwood Free Press (weekly paper): January 6th, 1893 – December 30th, 1909

  • Elwood Call-Leader: June 1st, 1904 – Present

We are always seeking volunteers to help us improve this database. Thank you to the many volunteers that have made this resource possible. Please contact the Elwood Public Library if you are interested in assisting with this project.

*Anna Baldwin is diligently working to update the records that were mistakenly added to this database over 20 years from the Index to Death Records Madison County 1882 to 1920. Many thanks to Anna for her continued work to improve the accuracy of this database.

**Robert Linegar and Betty Caldwell spent many hours in the library scanning microfilm for these obituaries and perfecting the resulting file to be placed in this database. Thank you Bob and Betty.
